model is myself... in a theatre dress :)

I keep being drawn to clair obscur for some reason.

this is part of a portfolio I'm building up to find a gallery. Quite happy with the overall result, not so much with the painting technique, but I can't be asked working on it anymore.

Oil and copper leaf on canvas, 70x120 cm.

Lovely work, You've captured the light on the small folds of the dress beautifully! And I like how you haven't gone too dark in the shadows of the flesh - gives it a more realistic look.

Interesting i am just wondering what it is that makes it so. I think it might have something to do with the partial light perhaps. The figure is half hidden out of sight.

heh, I don't know, you tell me :) it was my goal to get a somewhat mysterious atmosphere, hence the backlighting...

This is stunning. I really love the lighting, how the sun through the window behind her is shining through her hair. Just beautiful.

I have one question. It's been bothering me since I posted this, I realize now the head somehow seems to look too big. Would you agree, or am I just going a bit crazy? It's hard to tell when you've been working on something for a long time.

I do see what you mean, now that you pointed it out. The head does seem a tad large. However, it definitely wasn't the first thing that stood out about this painting. I definitely noticed the lighting, pose and composition first, so I think you are okay.

Can you change it at this point? For someone whose father painted predominantly in oils for almost 8 years, you would think I would know more about the medium, but I don't ;-). I would think that changing something like that on a finished piece would be quite difficult... :(

well, I haven't varnished it so I can always change it, yeah. The only problem is that the value of fresh paint sometimes changes while drying (not lights, but darks do), and you have bad surprises when you look at it the next day... So it's a bit risky. Then you want to fix that, and you end up messing up an even bigger area of the painting :D
